Microneedling aftercare
What to use, what to avoid & when.
Good skincare doesn't stop when your microneedling treatment ends. What you do afterwards is an important part of the experience.
Whether you're new to microneedling or already have an established routine, the right aftercare can help your skin feel comfortable, hydrated and cared for. But here's something worth knowing: not all microneedling treatments are the same. A 0.5 mm Skin Roller used at home and a deeper professional treatment can have different recovery needs.
Freshly microneedled skin is temporarily more sensitive, and even familiar skincare ingredients may not be appropriate immediately afterwards. So what should you put on your skin? Which ingredients deserve a place in your routine? And when can you get back to your usual skincare and makeup? Let's get into it.
A good aftercare routine isn't about using more products. It's about giving your skin what it needs, when it needs it.
01 / Why it matters
Why does aftercare matter after microneedling?
Microneedling uses fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. This temporarily disrupts the skin's protective barrier, which is also why your skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive following treatment. During this time, the skin can become more permeable to ingredients applied to its surface.
-
Essential 01
Hydration
Helping the skin maintain moisture and suppleness.
-
Essential 02
Comfort
Choosing appropriate products that won't unnecessarily irritate the skin.
-
Essential 03
Protection
Allowing the skin barrier to recover without additional stress.
Sometimes, the most effective skincare decision is simply to keep things uncomplicated.
02 / Hyaluronic acid
Why is hyaluronic acid good after microneedling?
Hyaluronic acid is one of skincare's most popular hydrating ingredients, and there's good science behind its reputation. It's a humectant, meaning it attracts and binds water. It also occurs naturally in the skin, where it contributes to moisture balance.
What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid?
When used in a suitable formulation, hyaluronic acid can help:
- Attract and retain moisture
- Improve skin softness and suppleness
- Give dehydrated skin a smoother, plumper appearance
- Reduce the feeling of tightness associated with dryness
- Keep skin feeling comfortable and hydrated
Can you apply hyaluronic acid immediately after microneedling?
It depends on the treatment and the product. Some at-home microneedling systems recommend specific hyaluronic acid serums for immediate application. However, an everyday hyaluronic acid serum isn't automatically suitable for freshly treated skin — the overall formulation matters, including preservatives, fragrances and other ingredients. Professional microneedling may also require different application timing.
03 / Peptides
Can you use peptides after microneedling?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids. In skincare, certain peptides are studied for their ability to support the appearance and feel of the skin. Different peptides have different properties, and their benefits depend on the specific formulation.
What do peptides do for the skin?
Some cosmetic peptides are associated with:
- Supporting a smoother-looking skin surface
- Improving the appearance of firmness
- Helping maintain skin suppleness
- Complementing a moisturising skincare routine
Peptides aren't all interchangeable, and not every peptide formula has the same evidence behind it.
Can you combine peptides with hyaluronic acid?
Yes. In everyday skincare, they can often be used together and serve complementary purposes: hyaluronic acid focuses primarily on hydration, while peptide formulations may offer additional skin-conditioning benefits.
04 / Moisturiser
Why should you moisturise after microneedling?
A hydrating serum and a moisturiser can work beautifully together, but they aren't necessarily doing the same job. Hydrating ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, attract and bind water. Moisturisers may also contain emollients and protective ingredients that soften the skin and help reduce moisture loss.
Four ingredients worth knowing
-
Panthenol
Provitamin B5A moisturising ingredient appreciated for its soothing properties and ability to support skin barrier function.
-
Beta-glucan
Soothing humectantKnown for its moisturising and soothing properties, beta-glucan can help maintain skin comfort.
-
Shea butter
EmollientHelps soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.
-
Vitamin E
AntioxidantAn antioxidant that also helps condition the skin.
05 / At home vs. in clinic
Is 0.5 mm at-home microneedling different from professional microneedling?
Yes, and understanding the difference is essential for choosing appropriate aftercare. Professional microneedling can use adjustable needles and more intensive techniques. At-home rollers generally have a fixed needle length and a different treatment method. These differences can affect both the skin's response and its recovery needs.
| Aspect | At-home 0.5 mm roller | Professional microneedling |
|---|---|---|
| Needle length | Fixed at 0.5 mm | May be adjustable or deeper |
| Treatment | Manual rolling | Professional device and technique |
| Aftercare | Device-specific guidance | Practitioner-specific guidance |
| Skincare products | Approved for the device | Selected for the treatment |
| Recovery | Depends on skin and technique | Depends on depth and intensity |
Worth knowing
Why needle length isn't the whole story
Two treatments using similar needle lengths don't necessarily affect skin in exactly the same way. Rolling pressure, number of passes, technique, skin condition and treatment frequency all influence the experience. That's why it's important to follow the instructions for your specific device instead of assuming all microneedling follows the same rules.
Is 0.5 mm microneedling risk-free?
No.
Even at 0.5 mm, needles penetrate the skin. Incorrect technique or poor hygiene can increase the risk of irritation, infection, scarring and pigmentation changes. Avoid rolling over active infections, open wounds or irritated skin. If you have a skin condition or are unsure whether microneedling is suitable for you, speak with a dermatologist first.
The right technique and aftercare go hand in hand.

06 / What to skip
What should you avoid after microneedling?
Freshly treated skin deserves a little extra consideration. This isn't the ideal moment to experiment with strong actives or introduce several unfamiliar products. Skip these immediately afterwards:
-
Retinol and retinoids
These can increase skin sensitivity. Wait until your treatment instructions allow them and your skin has settled.
-
Exfoliating acids (AHAs and BHAs)
Ingredients such as glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid may cause irritation on freshly treated skin.
-
Strong vitamin C formulations
Particularly acidic formulations may cause stinging and discomfort.
-
Facial scrubs and exfoliating brushes
Avoid additional physical exfoliation while your skin is recovering.
-
Unapproved serums
Even ingredients usually described as gentle may not be appropriate immediately after microneedling.
-
Exercise, saunas and sunshine
Heat, excessive sweating and sun exposure may increase discomfort during recovery. Avoid them for the period your treatment instructions recommend, stay out of direct sun during initial recovery, and resume a suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen when your protocol allows.
A simple aftercare reminder
Choose gentle products, avoid unnecessary friction, and give your skin time to settle. If you notice increasing redness, swelling, pain, discharge or blistering, seek medical advice rather than continuing treatment.
07 / In practice
The Swiss Clinic 0.5 mm Skin Roller aftercare routine.
Now that we've covered the ingredients and the science, here's how we bring everything together. Our Skin Roller features 0.5 mm needles and is designed around a specific at-home skincare routine. The principle is straightforward: choose a hydrating serum, allow your skin to rest, and finish with moisturiser.
Step 01
Choose your hyaluronic acid serum
There are two options within the Swiss Clinic routine. Both contain hyaluronic acid, so you don't need to use them together.
Hydration + skin comfort
Rejuvenating Serum X3
A lovely option if you prefer a more comprehensive formula combining hydration and comforting ingredients.
- Five forms of hyaluronic acid to support hydration and moisture retention
- 2% beta-glucan for moisturising and soothing care
- Two vegetable-derived collagen ingredients that help condition the skin and support a soft, supple feel
A hydration-focused approach
Hyaluronic Filler+
An appealing choice when you want a simple, moisture-focused serum that keeps skin comfortably hydrated.
- Hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain water
- PCA to support moisture balance
- Sugar beet-derived moisturising ingredients to support softness and suppleness
Which should you choose? Serum X3 offers a broader combination of hydrating and soothing ingredients, while Hyaluronic Filler+ focuses on hydration. Both are suitable options within the Skin Roller routine.
-
Step 02 Optional
Add Super Glue+ for peptide-focused care
Want to bring peptides into your routine? Super Glue+ can be combined with Hyaluronic Filler+. Its formula includes a tripeptide alongside moisturising glycerin and betaine — Filler+ provides hydration, Super Glue+ adds peptide-focused skin conditioning. Sometimes one thoughtfully chosen serum is all you need.

Step 03
Allow your skin to rest
30min, approx.Let your skin rest after serum application. Our published instructions give a 15–60-minute window, making approximately 30 minutes a convenient point in the routine.
-
Step 04
Finish with The Base+
Our moisturiser, formulated with ingredients including panthenol, vitamin E and shea butter to help moisturise, soften and maintain skin comfort. Apply gently after the recommended resting period.

And that's it. A simple routine built around hydration, carefully selected ingredients and giving your skin time to recover.
08 / Makeup
When can you wear makeup after microneedling?
Makeup timing depends on the treatment, your skin's response and the aftercare instructions.
0.5 mm Skin Roller
The next morning, if your skin has settled.
Swiss Clinic's product guidance allows makeup the following morning, provided your skin has settled and isn't showing significant irritation. However, some dermatology guidance recommends waiting at least 24 hours following microneedling. Waiting a full 24 hours is the more cautious option. If your skin is still red, warm or sensitive, wait longer.
When returning to makeup, use clean brushes, sponges and applicators, and avoid applying products over irritated skin.
Professional microneedling
Follow your practitioner's instructions.
More intensive professional treatments may require a different recovery period, so don't automatically apply at-home rolling guidance to salon treatments.
09 / Recovery
How long does skin take to recover after microneedling?
Recovery varies from person to person. Some people experience temporary redness, warmth, dryness or a feeling of tightness. Others notice less visible change.
What recovery depends on
- Needle length
- Treatment intensity
- Skin sensitivity
- Technique
Professional microneedling can cause redness lasting several days. An at-home 0.5 mm roller may have a different recovery pattern, but needle length alone doesn't guarantee a particular recovery time. If your skin feels uncomfortable, allow more time before resuming potentially irritating products or another treatment.
"The important thing isn't how quickly you can return to every step of your routine. It's allowing your skin to recover comfortably."

10 / Common questions
Microneedling aftercare FAQ.
What is the best serum to use after microneedling?
It depends on your treatment. Hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid are commonly used in post-treatment skincare, but only products suitable for your specific device or treatment should be applied immediately after microneedling.
Can I apply hyaluronic acid immediately after microneedling?
Some at-home devices recommend specifically formulated hyaluronic acid serums immediately after use. For other treatments, the timing may differ. Follow your device or practitioner's guidance.
Is hyaluronic acid or a peptide serum better after microneedling?
They have different purposes. Hyaluronic acid focuses primarily on hydration, while peptides may provide additional cosmetic skin-conditioning benefits. The appropriate choice depends on your treatment and the specific formulation.
Can I use peptides and hyaluronic acid together?
Yes, compatible peptide and hyaluronic acid products can complement each other. Swiss Clinic's Hyaluronic Filler+ and Super Glue+ can be paired within the brand's Skin Roller routine.
Do I need both Rejuvenating Serum X3 and Hyaluronic Filler+?
No. Both contain hyaluronic acid, so choose the one that best suits your preferred skincare routine.
Can I apply moisturiser straight after microneedling?
Follow your specific aftercare instructions. For Swiss Clinic's 0.5 mm Skin Roller, the recommended routine includes a resting period of approximately 30 minutes after serum application before applying The Base+.
Can I use retinol after microneedling?
Avoid retinol immediately after treatment. Wait until your skin has recovered and your treatment instructions allow you to resume it.
Can I wear makeup the next morning?
It depends on the treatment and whether your skin has settled. Although some at-home device guidance allows next-morning makeup, waiting at least 24 hours is the more cautious recommendation.
Is 0.5 mm microneedling the same as professional microneedling?
No. Professional treatments may use deeper needles and more intensive techniques. Aftercare instructions and recovery times can differ.
